How VDB UK shaped the accelerator at the heart of Plus X Innovation's national hub network — launching 69 companies, creating 1,100+ jobs, and unlocking £180m in investment. Sut y lluniodd VDB UK y cyflymydd wrth galon rhwydwaith canolfannau cenedlaethol Plus X Innovation — gan lansio 69 o gwmnïau, creu dros 1,100 o swyddi, a datgloi £180m mewn buddsoddiad.
Hardware and product startups face a fundamentally different challenge from their software counterparts. They need physical prototyping facilities, access to engineering mentors, supply chain guidance, and patient capital — not just desk space and Wi-Fi. In the UK, this segment was significantly underserved, with few purpose-built accelerator programmes designed around the specific needs of hardware founders.
Mae cwmnïau newydd caledwedd a chynnyrch yn wynebu her sylfaenol wahanol i'w cymheiriaid meddalwedd. Mae angen cyfleusterau prototeipio ffisegol, mynediad at fentoriaid peirianneg, arweiniad cadwyn gyflenwi, a chyfalaf amyneddgar arnynt — nid dim ond gofod desg a Wi-Fi. Yn y DU, roedd y segment hwn heb ddigon o wasanaeth, gydag ychydig o raglenni cyflymydd pwrpasol wedi'u dylunio o amgylch anghenion penodol sylfaenwyr caledwedd.
Plus X Innovation was building a national network of innovation hubs to address this gap, starting with the Central Research Laboratory (CRL) on the former EMI R&D campus in Hayes, West London. They needed a partner to design the accelerator programme that would sit at the heart of this network — one that could launch companies, attract investment, and scale nationally.
Roedd Plus X Innovation yn adeiladu rhwydwaith cenedlaethol o ganolfannau arloesi i fynd i'r afael â'r bwlch hwn, gan ddechrau gyda'r Central Research Laboratory (CRL) ar gampws Ymchwil a Datblygu EMI gynt yn Hayes, Gorllewin Llundain. Roedd angen partner arnynt i ddylunio'r rhaglen gyflymydd a fyddai wrth galon y rhwydwaith hwn — un a allai lansio cwmnïau, denu buddsoddiad, a graddio'n genedlaethol.
VDB UK was engaged to design a hardware accelerator programme that could operate at the centre of a national innovation hub network. The brief was threefold: create an accelerator structure and curriculum that worked for hardware founders, map the innovation ecosystem to identify the right partners and mentors, and inform the scaling strategy as the network expanded beyond London.
Cafodd VDB UK ei gomisiynu i ddylunio rhaglen gyflymydd caledwedd a allai weithredu yng nghanol rhwydwaith canolfannau arloesi cenedlaethol. Roedd y briff yn driphlyg: creu strwythur a chwricwlwm cyflymydd a oedd yn gweithio i sylfaenwyr caledwedd, mapio'r ecosystem arloesi i nodi'r partneriaid a mentoriaid cywir, a llywio'r strategaeth graddio wrth i'r rhwydwaith ehangu y tu hwnt i Lundain.
This was not a consulting exercise at arm's length. We embedded within the team, working alongside Plus X, Brunel University London, and developer U+I to shape a programme that would be credible to investors, valuable to founders, and replicable across multiple sites.
Nid ymarfer ymgynghori o bell oedd hwn. Fe wnaethom ymgorffori o fewn y tîm, gan weithio ochr yn ochr â Plus X, Prifysgol Brunel Llundain, a'r datblygwr U+I i lunio rhaglen a fyddai'n gredadwy i fuddsoddwyr, yn werthfawr i sylfaenwyr, ac yn ailadroddadwy ar draws sawl safle.
Design an accelerator that could launch hardware companies, attract institutional investment, and scale from one hub to a national network. Dylunio cyflymydd a allai lansio cwmnïau caledwedd, denu buddsoddiad sefydliadol, a graddio o un ganolfan i rwydwaith cenedlaethol.
Designed the 18-week CRL Accelerator structure and curriculum from the ground up. Defined selection criteria, cohort size, and progression milestones. Created the complete support framework including mentorship pathways, prototyping facility access, and funding guidance for hardware founders. Dylunio strwythur a chwricwlwm Cyflymydd CRL 18 wythnos o'r dechrau. Diffinio meini prawf dethol, maint carfan, a cherrig milltir cynnydd. Creu'r fframwaith cefnogi cyflawn gan gynnwys llwybrau mentora, mynediad i gyfleusterau prototeipiau, ac arweiniad cyllido ar gyfer sylfaenwyr caledwedd.
Identified and connected the key partners, mentors, and institutional supporters needed to make the programme credible and effective. Mapped the UK hardware startup landscape, identified unmet needs, and benchmarked against international hardware accelerators to ensure world-class programme design. Nodi a chysylltu'r partneriaid allweddol, mentoriaid, a chefnogwyr sefydliadol sydd eu hangen i wneud y rhaglen yn gredadwy ac yn effeithiol. Mapio tirwedd cwmnïau newydd caledwedd y DU, nodi anghenion heb eu diwallu, a meincnodi yn erbyn cyflymyddion caledwedd rhyngwladol i sicrhau dylunio rhaglenni o'r radd flaenaf.
Informed the expansion strategy as Plus X grew from Hayes to Brighton and Slough. Designed programme variants tailored to different stages — including BOOST for early-stage ventures and the Stage One Pre-Accelerator — ensuring the model could flex across locations and founder maturity levels. Llywio'r strategaeth ehangu wrth i Plus X dyfu o Hayes i Brighton a Slough. Dylunio amrywiadau rhaglenni wedi'u teilwra i wahanol gyfnodau — gan gynnwys BOOST ar gyfer mentrau cam cynnar a'r Cyn-Gyflymydd Cam Un — gan sicrhau y gallai'r model addasu ar draws lleoliadau a lefelau aeddfedrwydd sylfaenwyr.
Developed the funding guidance framework that helped cohort companies access £25m in grants. Created pathways connecting founders with public funding bodies, angel networks, and institutional investors — contributing to the portfolio companies collectively raising £180m. Datblygu'r fframwaith arweiniad cyllido a helpodd gwmnïau'r carfanau gael mynediad at £25m mewn grantiau. Creu llwybrau'n cysylltu sylfaenwyr â chyrff cyllido cyhoeddus, rhwydweithiau angel, a buddsoddwyr sefydliadol — gan gyfrannu at gwmnïau'r portffolio yn codi £180m gyda'i gilydd.
Contributed to the evidence base demonstrating the programme's national impact: 69 companies supported across 10+ accelerator cohorts (2017–2023), 1,100+ jobs created, and recognition through the Property Week Awards. This impact data supported the case for continued expansion and institutional backing. Cyfrannu at y sylfaen dystiolaeth sy'n dangos effaith genedlaethol y rhaglen: 69 o gwmnïau wedi'u cefnogi ar draws 10+ carfan cyflymydd (2017–2023), dros 1,100 o swyddi wedi'u creu, a chydnabyddiaeth trwy Wobrau Property Week. Cefnogodd y data effaith hwn yr achos dros barhau i ehangu a chefnogaeth sefydliadol.
The UK's innovation infrastructure was built primarily for software and digital businesses. Hardware startups — building physical products that require prototyping, testing, manufacturing partnerships, and longer development cycles — were largely left without the dedicated support they needed. Generic accelerator programmes often failed these founders because they didn't account for the realities of hardware development.
Adeiladwyd seilwaith arloesi'r DU yn bennaf ar gyfer busnesau meddalwedd a digidol. Gadawyd cwmnïau newydd caledwedd — sy'n adeiladu cynhyrchion ffisegol sy'n gofyn am brototeipiau, profi, partneriaethau gweithgynhyrchu, a chylchoedd datblygu hirach — heb y gefnogaeth bwrpasol yr oedd ei hangen arnynt i raddau helaeth. Roedd rhaglenni cyflymydd generig yn aml yn methu'r sylfaenwyr hyn oherwydd nad oeddent yn cyfrif am realiti datblygu caledwedd.
We designed a programme that treated hardware founders as what they are: engineers building real things that need real infrastructure, real mentors, and patient capital. Fe wnaethom ddylunio rhaglen a oedd yn trin sylfaenwyr caledwedd fel yr hyn ydynt: peirianwyr sy'n adeiladu pethau go iawn sydd angen seilwaith go iawn, mentoriaid go iawn, a chyfalaf amyneddgar.
By designing a programme specifically for hardware, we helped create an environment where physical product startups could develop at the same pace and with the same ambition as their software peers. The result was not just a successful accelerator, but a replicable model that has now expanded to three locations and supported companies that have gone on to raise significant follow-on investment.
Trwy ddylunio rhaglen yn benodol ar gyfer caledwedd, fe wnaethom helpu creu amgylchedd lle gallai cwmnïau newydd cynhyrchion ffisegol ddatblygu ar yr un cyflymder a chyda'r un uchelgais â'u cymheiriaid meddalwedd. Y canlyniad oedd nid yn unig cyflymydd llwyddiannus, ond model ailadroddadwy sydd bellach wedi ehangu i dri lleoliad ac wedi cefnogi cwmnïau sydd wedi mynd ymlaen i godi buddsoddiad dilynol sylweddol.
The accelerator programme we designed became the centrepiece of Plus X Innovation's national network. From CRL's launch in Hayes in 2015, the model has scaled to Brighton (2020) and Slough (2023), with 10+ cohorts delivered and Cohort 12 now underway. The programme has directly supported 69 companies, helped founders access £25m in grants, and contributed to portfolio companies collectively raising £180m in investment.
Daeth y rhaglen gyflymydd a ddyluniwyd gennym yn ganolbwynt i rwydwaith cenedlaethol Plus X Innovation. O lansiad CRL yn Hayes yn 2015, mae'r model wedi graddio i Brighton (2020) a Slough (2023), gyda 10+ carfan wedi'u cyflawni a Charfan 12 ar y gweill nawr. Mae'r rhaglen wedi cefnogi 69 o gwmnïau yn uniongyrchol, wedi helpu sylfaenwyr gael mynediad at £25m mewn grantiau, ac wedi cyfrannu at gwmnïau'r portffolio yn codi £180m mewn buddsoddiad gyda'i gilydd.
With over 1,100 jobs created and recognition through the Property Week Awards, the programme stands as evidence that well-designed, sector-specific accelerator infrastructure can deliver outsized impact — when the programme design is right from the start.
Gyda dros 1,100 o swyddi wedi'u creu a chydnabyddiaeth trwy Wobrau Property Week, mae'r rhaglen yn dystiolaeth y gall seilwaith cyflymydd wedi'i ddylunio'n dda ac yn benodol i'r sector gyflawni effaith sylweddol — pan fydd dyluniad y rhaglen yn gywir o'r dechrau.
